When She Woke by Hillary Jordan
BOOK SUMMARY

Most members stated that this book was a "good choice." The novel itself is a very realistic to our current political state in the U.S. Comments were made that the people who were melachromed were basically treated as nothing; they were left to their own devices, which left them extremely vulnerable to theft, rape, and murder, but society was okay with it. Additionally, it was noted that people could be the same color, yet the degree of the crime could be vary. This took some of the gray out of the law and measured actions in a more black and white realm. Another aspect that was discussed was the religious viewpoint in the novel. Members had much to say on the topic of religion and how different characters in the novel fit the "virtues" of religion or "exploited" religion. It was pointed out that on page 147 the author mentions the 2nd Great Depression, tax money wasted on housing criminals, schools failing, and roads and bridges crumbling. This was important in the discussion because we felt that those items were happening to us now; thus, making the novel even more disturbing in its likeness to our current society. Finally, the ending was a focus as well. Some readers stated that they didn't like the ending. It seemed as if the author just didn't know what to write anymore, so just neatly wrapped it up. However, upon further discussion, it was pointed out that the ending may have been a clever attempt to make it seem like the protagonist was dreaming. We had several scenarios revolving around that aspect, so in the end, we had much to reconsider regarding the ending of the novel.
