On Agate Hill by Lee Smith Book Summary Club Discussion: This was a "circus of a book." In fact, one club member repeatedly laughed about the "small man" in the third portion of the book. We concluded that the author was describing someone who is a midget or little person. This character fit right in with the disjointed characters that appeared throughout the novel. There were so many characters that members had a hard time keeping them straight while reading. The way the story begins with a researcher was also a contention among readers. There was not enough about the present researcher to link it well to the remainder of the book. In fact, many readers forgot all about the researcher until she was mentioned again later in the novel. While many readers did not look favorably on the book, they did find some characters mysterious. Simon Black was not only mysterious, but several stated that he was a "scary dude." Mariah Snow was also a character that garnered attention from readers because her actions were bizarre. Lastly, Agnes was looked upon as the female support that main character Molly needed and desired. Finally, club members ended with "Who shot Jacky?" Many scenarios were discussed such as suicide, Icy, or BJ. | Meeting Attendance: Karla Kathy Cheryl Alicia Teri Sheela Pamela Lori |
