Life Sentences by Tekla Dennison Miller
SPOILER ALERT!
This psychological thriller is the first in a series by Miller. The fictitious tale brings to light the phenomenon of women who fall in love with inmates.
The first excitement from readers was the surprise about the protagonist's (Pilar's) death. Readers were surprised, as they did not predict the outcome of the event. Did Chad have a hand in Pilar's death, or was it just a momentary decision by Jayne and her crazy ex-con boyfriend.
The novel generated much anger among readers because of the relationship between Chad and Pilar. She was a doctor in a prison, who knew about Chad's murders. In fact, one victim was her friend. Before she began working at the prison and even during her shifts, she was warned about Chad. But one minute she was disgusted by his actions and the next minute she was in love with him. The path to their relationship could have been more fleshed out. Readers were disappointed with the "turn the page" and they're a couple.
The killings of the women (who look like Pilar) along with hints throughout the novel, intrigued readers about the true relationship between Pilar and Chad. Possibly sister and brother? Maybe book 2, Inevitable Sentences, reveals the truth.

The incestuous nature of the character Chad and his mother was a hot topic for readers. While not graphic, it is alluded to in the novel. This "Oedipus" complex was discussed.
