If I Stay by Gayle Forman

*Spoiler Alert: Discuss below divulges ending*
The perspective in this novel is a girl in limbo (or in a coma). Do people really hear conversations when in a coma? Do those in a coma get to 'decide' if they are going to stay or go?
This perspective was engaging for readers. They felt that the main character, Mia, was very strong. It seems like a tough decision to decide to live even though her entire family has died.
The way the novel unraveled by moving between Mia's life and the current state of her coma was interesting for readers. While some of the writing was definitely "young adult," there were some very powerful parts, such as the death of Teddy, Mia's brother, and the Grandfather's whispering to Mia while she is in the coma.
Readers also noted how much they enjoyed the characters Willow, the strong and determined nurse/friend, and Kim, the loyal young girl who has to deal with her friend's possible demise.
Also, readers enjoyed the idea of music playing a role in the novel. It was not just one genre of music that was referenced throughout. Mia's parents had been in a band, she was a classical cellist, her boyfriend (Adam) was in a rock band, and the music played in the operating room crossed genres as well.
The theme 'in order to love, one must learn to accept love' comes out toward the end when Mia makes her decision to stay.
