Hannah's Fly Away was a sequel to one reader's favorite novel Firefly Lane. However, the sequel did not live up to the original novel. The characters were a bit flat, as was some of the plot.
Mariah, daughter to Johnny and Kate, is a troubled young woman since her mother died from cancer. While she was a lost girl, she was also penned as entitled and spoiled, which did not have readers connecting with her. While her guilt was evident, she was nasty, if not especially horrible, to Tully, which again made the character not connect with readers.
Additionally, Johnny, the bereaved husband, was a ghost of a character in the novel, when readers felt he should have had more connection.
Finally, the idea that Tully was in a coma for a year was a bit odd and overly drawn out in the novel.
