How has technology influenced your life?
Is it a positive thing? OR a negative?
Do you think that advancement in technology is a good thing or a bad thing? Why?

Your initial post should reflect deep critical thinking and reflection on this topic.

For this session, you MUST reply to TWO (2) posts.

Technology has not so much influenced my life as it has been added to it. Aside from the developing technology that I have witnessed like, VHS tapes to DVD's or CD's to Ipods, technology has not been a very big influence on me. Yes I watch TV and have an Ipod but I dont have a laptop of my own or even a phone with internet capabilities. I have never been that one person that can not survive a couple of days without a phone or posting on facebook or twitter. I think technology can be a positive influence but it can also go the other way. I know kids who were born in the 2000's and can type better than they can write. This may be the way the future is headed but I think that is just wrong. Writing longhand to me is such a romantic notion. I feel that writing to someone is so much more personable than sending a text or an email. Kids are becoming "zombies" for lack or a better word. They are attached to their phones, tablets,Ipads and Ipods. It kills their socials skills which are vital in the world. Without being social what do we have? I think other technical advances are great like medicine wise. Scientists creating robots to help paralyzed people walk is just so amazing to me. But advancing things like the Iphone are just ridiculous. There is no reason a phone should have a finger print scanned on it or any other outrageous thing they will think to add to it.I think that the way technology seems to be advancing is a waste because they should focus on things that will help the world not put it's focus on materialistic things.

I agree with you that a handwritten letter is much more personable than a text or email. I have always wanted to do this, but technology has advanced. It is hard to find anyone to write letters to when there is access to email and phones. I do not agree that children are becoming zombies. Obviously technology plays a part in everyone's life, but it does not make each person that uses technology a zombie. It is true that some teenagers allow technology to take over their life, and they may become zombies or have a lack of social skills. I just do not think that being into or associated with a lot of technology makes you a zombie. (I just said zombie too many times.)

Christine

I also agree with Sammy that a handwritten letter is much more personal than a text or email. I also do not believe that children are becoming zombies. While more children are playing video games, kids are also learning to surf the web and learning how to use the internet for educational purposes. I say this with confidence because I have an eight year-old little brother who is in the fourth grade. He has computer classes that teaches him and his classmates how to use the web properly... and not just for game purposes. While I cannot deny that he has his own iPad which he constantly plays games on, he also knows how to use it to surf the web for facts. My mother even goes to him for help sometimes. He searches movie showtimes, random facts, homework questions, and the opening and closing time for game stop and best buy. I am always completely amazed by his knowledge to do things. I think it is great that the younger generation knows so much about today's technology because it is becoming a more vital part of today's society.

I definitely do agree with you on what you said about a handwritten letter. It is much more personal and meaningful than a text message or email. Also I agree with the fact that you brought up the way technology is advancing is wrong. You're completely right when you said they should focus on things that will help the world, not advancing iphones. However, I disagree that kids are becoming "zombies" because technology is teaching them a lot of things. Even if children are younger playing video games, it teaches them the concepts of the game. Also, as Christine said, I have a 9 year old brother who is always talking to me about how to write papers and the formats he uses in class in his computer class. Technology can be a negative effect but if used properly for the right things it can be very helpful.

Technology has influenced my life greatly. Since I have a smartphone, I am always checking emails, texting someone, or refreshing my Twitter feed. Just because I am constantly checking my phone does not mean that I am attached to it. I have broken my phone a couple times and had to go multiple days without it. I am okay with that; it is not something that I feel lost without. Another way technology has influenced my life is through newspaper. We obviously use a lot of different technology in order to share news. I have become familiar with Microsoft Publisher by laying out the newspaper. Also, the newspaper uses technology to its advantage. Through twitter and a website we are expanding past just a printed issue. This online English class is yet another example of how technology has influenced my life. I have learned how to have a discussion online, how to submit assignments online, and much more. These tools will help me as I gear up for college and most likely many other online classes. Thanks to technology, I will be prepared.
I believe it is a positive thing because as I said, I learned many tools from technology that will help me in my future. My phone can sometimes be a negative influence because it distracts me from school work, but at the same time it is useful for schoolwork. For example, if I come across a word that I do not know, I can easily look it up on my phone (or computer), find the definition, and move on.
I think advancement in technology is a good thing. These days, advancements in technology are opening a lot of education opportunities. Again, this class is a prime example. Our district introduced a blended class that includes mostly online work. By doing so, students of BASD are able to have a chance to get used to (semi) learning on their own.

You brought up a really good point about how this online class will prepare us for college. I had not even thought about that when I was writing my reply. I agree that moving forward is always good but at what cost? Can we really only rely on technology? Technology does not always come through as I'm sure we have all experienced. And we still need to have social skills. But for the most part I can definitely see a positive side to advancements in technology. Thanks Samantha!

Steven

I agree with the majority of what you said throughout your comment. First, I loved what you said as far as preparing us for college goes. Because of this course I feel as though I have a better work ethic. Secondly, not necessarily pertaining to this exact comment but what you said about the medical advancements. That is a great point that no one did cover and I believe that the medical advancements that our species has achieved is remarkable. Now, something that I would like to know is that although you personally do not need technology to live, do you think that there is such a thing as a "technology addiction?" I have seen people be physically attached to their phone as they would any other addictive behavior, and I would love to know what you think about that.

Samantha
10/10/2013 04:44:46 am

Steven, I do believe there is such thing as a "technology addiction." Although, I have not met anyone that I thought was so attached to technology that they had an addiction to it. I think if someone with this "addiction" were to sit down and do homework for an hour without technology, they may not be able to do it. I think they might cave and proceed to use the computer or a phone to do thew homework.

You brought up an interesting point about the expansion of technology into journalism and published news. Being that newspapers have been the traditional source in America for information about the world and politics, it's hard to say how I feel about this newly formed method of obtaining information. Many are saying this is the death of physical newspapers. If this is true, do you think this is unfavorable for public opinion? It wouldn't be in the public's best interest if only a select group of people could formulate opinions and vote solely based off of the materials they got from their expensive iPads. Inversely, lower-income families will have a disadvantage when it comes to voting for the candidate best suited for their needs due to the fact that they can't even afford to pay rent this month, much less gather information on the best candidate to support them. The problem being with new technology is it widens the gap between upper and lower income citizens. The wealthy will be able to educate themselves on candidates' policies and ideals, whereas impoverished people will be too busy trying to survive. Ultimately, the candidate chosen will most likely be the favored candidate of the wealthy, benefiting upper class citizens more than the poor. How do you think this move from conventional newspapers to digital articles will affect society as a whole?

Steven
10/8/2013 06:07:06 am

Technology has influenced my life just as much as the next teenager that you will come across. To me, technology can be seen as a bad or a good thing through my eyes though. Firstly, I view it as a good thing because of the way that it has helped my education and opinions on things grow. For example this class that I am currently writing this blog response for would not exist if it weren't for the fast growing opportunities in technology. Not only this class can be made for the argument of me learning new topics, but also just coming across a video or an article that can help you learn something new. The internet is one big independent learning tool that can be used to learn just about anything. Also, because of being able to watch television and read articles online about the government on the United States, I have been able to form an opinion about what I believe is right for the country. Technology has also allowed me to keep in contact with people that I would not always have been able to otherwise. My mother travels all over the country every week, without being able to call her I wouldn't be able to talk to her and be as close with her as I am. Then again, without the advanced technology of air travel she wouldn't be able to travel all over the country.
Then, there is the bad side of technology. For me personally, I have a problem with being lazy and putting on tv, or playing a video game. Because of the fun that technology brings, my work ethic has gone down the drain. I don't know a single person that would rather do homework than watch their favorite television show, educational or not. Then there is social media. Social media has never been a direct impact to me negatively, but I have seen the nastiness that takes place on websites like those.
At the end of the day, I believe that the advancement in technology is a good thing. Without the advancement of technology we would still be using stones and sticks for common tools, which now we see as necessities. Regardless of the bad that comes in the short run with all of the new things, technology can only make everything better off in the long run.

Christine
10/9/2013 04:51:29 pm

I completely agree with you when you say that technology has had a positive impact on your life. This course for one and the fact we gain so much knowledge from the internet. Just thinking about it, children these days are getting smarter at a younger age because they are introduced to the internet and they are able to gain so much of their knowledge there. Technology also allows me to get in contact with my family members located all other the world.
On the flip side, I do not believe that video games and watching tv is necessarily a bad thing. Finding pleasure in these things are normal and healthy.
I do have to agree with your views of social media because I have witnessed the negative effects it has the capability of being.

Logan

I completely agree with what you said. Many teenagers, such as us, are highly influenced by technology. I didn't even think to include the online class in my explanation. I love having this online class; it is a great opportunity for students in high school to teach themselves how to manage their time. Unlike you, I'm not very much into video games, but I certainly use my social networks all the time. I don't even know what I used to do before I got a smartphone; I am on Twitter and Instagram constantly. In addition to what you said about being lazy with technology, I believe that I am, too. I use Google for nearly every assignment that I get.

Sam

I can't really say how much technology has influenced my life, because I haven't been alive long enough to see a life without technology. Since I was born in 1996, I haven't lived a single year without personal computers being available to the public. That being said, I can account for the difference in the way technology impacts my life today as compared to the time in my life when computing power was far less advanced. When I was younger, computers weren't very accessible. Even when I was able to use a computer, it was not an important part of my life. I did, however, come in contact with plenty of other technology like television and radio; this technology was a large part of my life when I was younger. Today, technology has vastly improved. Likewise, technology's significance in my life today has also increased. With this increase, there are both positive and negative benefits. For one thing, technology's improvements have provided advancements in medical research. On the other hand, technology can hurt the motivation or people. I sometimes find myself getting distracted by technology when I should be doing work. In summary, it's hard to determine if technology will vastly benefit modern society or will destroy it. The only certainty is that it will change the future of human existence.

Cristina

Sam I completely and 100% agree with you on this one. I can see both positive and negative sides to this and I am very uncertain as to where technology will lead us. Will we go to far over our heads or will we be able to accomplish our desired goals. We have always had technology open for our use and it has developed quite a bit over the past 17 years,I am both anxious and excited to see where it will go from here.

Steven
10/10/2013 04:23:52 am

Your comment really made me think of this question in a different way. You are completely right in the fact of saying that we have never had a time in our life where technology wasn't around, therefore we have always been influenced by it and cannot state a comparison from then to now. I then loved how you began to back up your opinion with information of how technology has improved causing a larger role in your life. Like Sammy, you also stated about medical research and I love that idea. Its crazy to think how much that we have covered in such a short amount of time.

Sam
10/10/2013 08:48:28 am

Good job, Sam. Yet another example of perfect execution is accredited to you. ooooooh. kill em.

tori
10/10/2013 12:41:10 pm

Sam, I couldn't agree with you more on this response. As writing my response it didn't even cross my mind that I have never lived in a world without technology. I can relate to everything you said about the positive and negative effects of technology improvement. I agree that the improvement of technology has provided many advancements in the medical and other fields. I personally get very distracted by technology when doing important things; however, if it did come down to it I could survive without it. Technology has definitely developed a lot over my life and it makes me think of what this world will be like technologically in years from now.

Jess
10/11/2013 06:19:25 am

I understand where you are coming from with this and most of us teenagers and children can agree, whereas adults may not understand. The advancements have sky rocketed a lot throughout our lifetime so we can see how much it has impacted on our society. The positive aspects of technology, in my viewpoint, overpower the negativity because I believe the negative uses of technology is our own fault. We must learn how to not get distracted by technology and not blame technology itself. I definitely agree with you that it will change the future of human existence.

Logan

Technology has influenced my life greatly. Every single day, I use my cell phone, I watch television, I go on social networks and I use my computer. Technology is both a positive and negative factor in my life. When used properly, technology can be a great educational tool, and it can help spread information very quickly. On the negative side, technology has consumed the lives of many people. Without my phone I think I would die. I would have to completely change how I lived my day to day life without a cell phone because I depend on it so much.

Samantha
10/9/2013 04:22:02 pm

Technology obviously is widely used as an educational tool, as you said. This discussion is a perfect example. You added that technology can help spread information quickly. Thank you for making that point because I had not thought about that when making my original post. Good for you for admitting that you are attached to your phone. *Snaps*.
Also, I want to add something that no one really talked about for this particular blog. The technological advancements made throughout the years are very positive when it comes to medicine. Without technology, how would doctors detect cancer or even treat it? Just something to think about.

tori
10/8/2013 09:54:22 am

Technology has definitely greatly impacted my life. I use technology on a daily basis. I am constantly texting someone and refreshing my
Twitter timeline as Samantha said. I believe that there are plus and negative sides of technology. Technology can be very helpful to look up information you may not know and it can spread news quickly so people are always informed about issues or things going on. However, the internet can also spread false information and spread rumors. Also, knowing for personal experience when trying to do school work at home technology can be very distracting to a person. It comes to the point where you find yourself on technology more often then you find yourself doing your actual schoolwork. I personally am very depended on technology when it comes to certain things. I believe that an advancement in technology can be a good thing considering it may allow anyone to view things differently. It teaches kids new ways to learn, and develop skills. I think that new advancements in technology will help our future.

Sam
10/10/2013 08:15:18 am

I totally agree with your opinions of how technology can help people. The flow of information has definitely increased enormously over the past years, and I think it has benefited modern society greatly. Like you mentioned, it is a bit of a double edged sword, though. While information can be spread easier, the accuracy of the information might be bad. Rumors and misinformation is a huge problem with technology.

Jess
10/11/2013 06:13:59 am

I completely agree with you that technology is very helpful to many things but can also spread false information. It's important to be careful with technology because some elements of it can be unreliable. Also, I agree that it can be very distracting because I have my own personal experience being distracted by Twitter and Instagram. However, if technology didn't exist I would most likely still get distracted by other things, so I wouldn't necessarily blame technology for this moreso, it goes with time management skills. Your conclusion stating how advancements in technology will help our future is very accurate and I can completely agree.

Christine
10/8/2013 10:17:21 am

Technology has had a huge influence in my life. Whether it is the simple things such as a microwave, or more complex things like my laptop and my cell phone, technology's influence on my life is definitely positive. By allowing access to just about anything in this world, the advancements in today's technology is so beneficial to our community. Not only is it entertaining to play video games and watch movies, but technology is so much more than that. It allows us to do the everyday things in our lives that we are accustomed to. Everything we do now involves technology.
While in some people's eyes that is a bad thing, I beg to differ. I think the advances in technology only benefit our society more as it allows us to do the things we do in a more efficient and timely manner. For example, if we did not have computers did not exist, we would have to hand write everything and look thing up in the library. While that is not such a bad thing, the internet provides us with such a quicker was to do it.
Personally, technology has influences my life because it allows a form of communication to my family members through out the world. Whether it is calling my grandma or my aunt who live in North Carolina and California, or emailing/facebook messaging my cousins and relatives in the Philippines, I am so grateful to be able to communicate with them even from thousands of miles away.

Jess
10/8/2013 11:27:00 am

Technology has influenced my life because I have never experienced life without technology. I make use of technology every day, probably more than I should. My life has practically revolved around music and with the advancements in Ipods and Iphones it has made music a lot more accessible. Also communicating with others is easier with technology. I do use technology a lot, however, I have not let it control my life. It is positive as long as we do not abuse our privilege to use technology when and however we want. Advancements in technology are a good thing because it can make work and studying habits go faster and easier so that in the long run our society becomes more innovative.

Logan
10/10/2013 06:46:02 am

I completely agree with what you said about the role of technology in your life. Many teenagers in our generation cannot truly compare life with technology and life without it because we never really were without it. From the time we were born, most of us had televisions, baby monitors, washing machines, modern automobiles and many more things. We were all raised around these tools and were offered shortcuts that our grandparents wouldn't have been able to use. While this is great for us, our generation has missed out on many character building activities that would shape our personalities. Like our elders always say, "I had to walk ten miles in the snow to get to school."
