This week I'm going to leave the blog open. I'm still going to check to make sure you posted according to the deadlines, but I'm not going to hold your posts. They will be posted as you submit them. This is more of a real-world experience in online class discussion, and I want to see how the class handles it.

Suggestion
: Read the story "No Witchcraft for Sale" first before creating your blog.

Prompt: What are your thoughts about “magic” herbs or potions and their healing effects? Do you think that powerful thoughts can control the health (or death) of a person? Why? How?

How might these two questions relate to religious beliefs?

Be sure to keep notes while watching the 24-minute Universal Themes in Literature video in VLN under Instructional Materials.

After watching the video, post an initial comment listing the 7 themes and 15 sub-themes mentioned in the video and briefly explain each one. Yes, all of your responses should be the similar, but you won't see them until I release the comments ;)

Then, once the comments are released on Tuesday evening (9/10), you will go back in and post a reply on one student's entry.
In your reply, you will give one example of a piece of literature, short story, poem, song, movie, etc. for EACH Universal Theme. The example you provide does NOT have to be from the video.

Note: Be careful with taking notes. In order to earn full credit, you will need to be correct in your list of themes/sub-themes and explanations.

College Essay Writing Session

9/2/2013

Sign up under COMMENTS as to the day you want to come in for a College Essay Session.

Please note the following:
1. I will only allow 2 people to sign up per session. Therefore, make sure you look at the comments posts prior to signing up for YOUR session.

2. You MUST bring a working copy of a college essay with you. For help with this, see links below. The links will assist you with writing a rough copy. Do NOT send me a copy. You need to bring a HARD copy (already printed) in order to attend a session. (If you can bring 2 that would be handy, as well.) I will not print out essays the day of your session. That is your job to be prepared.

3. These are the only sessions I will be holding during school hours. If you (A) cannot make one of these or (B) need a second session, you will have to schedule an after-school session with me.

4. Be prepared to read your essay aloud. This is a great way to provide meaningful opportunity for revision.

5. You will need to look at applications for the colleges in which you will be applying to get the prompt for the essay.
The Common Application
